Scuba Diving in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil

< The map indicates the location of the wracks.

Salvador is a paradise for wreck scuba diving: you can go diving every day for two weeks and not have to see the same wreck twice. A number of decent scuba dive shops have spring up, and the city itself is friendly and inviting. The waters in the bay are normally quite warm, and divers most likely will not need a wetsuit.

For centuries, Salvador has been Brazil’s most important city. It was the capital of the nation until 1763. It features a large natural harbor, and was a major New World shipping center. Thousands of ships came and went ... and some came and never left.

Some of the wrecks in Salvador
  • Cavo Artemidi - Sunk in 1980. Cargo ship with 170 meters of length. Depths from 9 to 30 meters.
The Cavo Artemidi is considered one of the most spectacular wreck dives in Brazil. It is considered the largest shipwreck in Brazilian waters and the whole Atlantic. It is in a good state of preservation. Lots of fish. It is easy to reach from Barra, but you have to watch the currents and plan the dive well.

  • Banco da Panela - one of the largest archaeological sites in Brazil - transformed in a protect area by the Navy, the collection of any artefacts from the bottom is strictly forbidden - it is located by the entrance of Salvador's port, with an average depth of 15 meters.
It is home to the remains of more than 90 ships sunk during the Dutch invasion. After 400 years, there’s nothing recognizable as a ship anymore, but you’ll see anchors, wood scraps, and a possibly a cannon.

  • Bretagne/Germania - The debris of these 2 ships are mixed on the bottom. Depth of 8 meters

  • Cap Frio - Sunk 80 years ago. Depths from 10 to 12 meters. Excellent night dive. Near the "Porto da Barra"

  • Blackadder - Norwegian coal trading ship 80 meters long. The depth ranges from 8 to 12 meters

  • Queen - Sunk in 1800. Located at 22 meters

  • Ho Mei III - Chinese fishing boat 47 meters long. Located at 36 meters

  • Maraldi - Sunk in 1875. Depths between 4 and 12 meters

  • Parana/Salvador - The debris of the first are at 19 meters and the other at 12 meters

  • Piacava - Debris of ships from the 18th century. Large habitat of octopuses and lobsters

  • Vapor da Jequitaia - a well-preserved steamship, 27 meters long, between 4 and 8 meters of depth

  • Utrech - Dutch galleon sunk during the 17th century. The debris is at 22 meters

  • Sacramento Galleon - Sunk in 1668. Located at 32 meters
